4th of july

my *favorite* holiday is just around the corner.  And when I say *favorite* I mean the one I *most dislike*. And when I say *most dislike* I mean *hate*. And when I say *hate* I mean *REALLY REALLY hate*!  I despise the 4th of July!  I hate that idiots are allowed to buy explosives and set them off cause they “look pretty.” I hate it that parents buy the shit WEEKS in advance and let their kids shoot them off to keep them “happy”. I hate it that young boys let them off and hit me in the arm with them...ok wait. Lemme splain. When I was about 8 I got hit by a flying pack of black cats. I’ve still got a scar.  It was a very unpleasant experience - I didn’t like it ONE bit. This, like many US celebratory holidays is just an excuse for people to blow shit up, take a day off work, and get drunk.  And while I am at it, drunk people and explosives don’t mix.  I don’t even GO to 4th of July parties because of the drunkenness mixed with the fire works.

I really hate the fact that on Saturday I had my baby kitten all asleep cuddled in my lap, wrapped up in my sweater until the next door brats lets off some black cats on MY back PORCH! DAMN youngins!  Just the latest thing that these little creatins have done to piss me off.

not that angry

i would just like to point out that “normal and retarded” was not directed at any one person. It was a culmination of frustrations.  A certain person INSPIRED the post, but it wasn’t aimed at him.  It was a general rant on how I feel about words and the way they are used.

normal and retarded

in a comment I got recently, in a post called “corky the retarded” someone wanted me to define “normal.” That comment inspired this post.

Normal has mulitple definitions, and many of those definitions depend on the context in which the word is used. All words are either normative or non-normative depending on how they are used. (Normative indicates a use of value judgment, such as good or bad.)

“Biology. Functioning or occurring in a natural way; lacking observable abnormalities or deficiencies.”

What I am talking about here is equating the word “normal” with good and the word “abnormal” with bad - the normative indications of the word “normal.” I didn’t use the term “normal” in the casual sense, but rather in the more specific, non-normative sense.  I didn’t pass judgment. I didn’t equate normal with good.  I indicated that I thought Corky was “abnormal” and that he shouldn’t/couldn’t date women who were “normal.” Corky functions at a level of intelligence that is so much lower that those around him that he CANNOT function as they do. That is not a judgment - it is a FACT of his life.

I usually say that I work with adults who are developmentally disabled.  I often have to further define by saying they are ”retarded." I don’t say “I work with retards.” I say “I work with adults who are retarded.” They ARE retarded. It’s is the psychological designation.  Their development has been retarded - whether it from birth or from an injury.  I’ve been told that I am being rude or insensitive to call my clients “retarded.” You may think that I am being rude or insensitive.  It is perfectly acceptable to use the term retarded when talking about someone who has the clinical diagnosis of retardation.  If i were diagnosed as being schizophrenic, would you use another term for me? Something easier on YOUR ears? No. You would say “Luka is schizophrenic.”

People have used the term “retarded” in a derogatory sense for far too long. People have used the term “normal” to indicate “the good way - the best way.” When using these terms, you really need to think about WHAT they mean. As well as HOW they are being used.

change

I should prolly make a skin gallery page like I did before.  It’s just such a PITA.  It would however make my website load faster.  People complain that I have too much on my main page. I’m trying to learn how to use the collapsible side bar script, but I was unsuccessful in getting it to work on my archive page.  Maybe I will just use the collapsible thing for the skins menu, rather using a gallery. I dunno.  The gallery presents people with what they are getting into with a skin before they select it, I could also give info about each skin.  I dunno.  At some point I am sure that something with change.

I’ve been feeling the need for change for the last couple of days - even so far as I have been contemplating getting my hair cut short.  The Mr Q&0153; makes the saddest face when I suggest it, but I am so bored with having my hair up in a pony all the time.  I don’t have AC in my car so wearing it down really isn’t an option there, and most times if it’s up I just leave it up.  It’s just so boring, and unflattering.  I just want something fun and funky. I doubt that I will do anything about it though. That’s just how I am.
