If I could do today over again… I would. Why?
Yesterday I was informed by my boss that he would not be into work today. I would be alone in the office except for our network guy - heretofore known as “Bob” - and would probably have to answer any calls that came in, dispatching them to the appropriate people.
Knowing that I would be mostly alone, I left open the door to my office so as to get some much needed airflow. Bob usually inhabits the dungeon of our building, or is out riding the mower over the acres of grass around our building when the demand on his network services is low. This is virtually all the time.
However, Bob has this odd habit of keeping the virus scanner fresh on the systems that nobody in our office uses and are usually off. This would include the computer at the reception desk outside of my office door. This reception desk is the explicit reason why I usually keep my office door closed, to minimize the noice of things/people being received and maximize my concentration.
So when Bob sat down for three hours to update that virus scanner, I had the displeasure of being stare at by our network admin for the duration.
Moreover, I had to “use the facilities” during half that time, and while I’m obviously not shy about revealing this information, I don’t see any reason why I should be forced to give it up unwillingly by having to pass by Bob at the reception desk which is not his.
Nor could I find a way to close my door without overtly stating, “Bob, I don’t want you to watch me work.” Thankfully you can’t see my screen from outside, otherwise none of my FFAF posts would have been written today.
And so what would I have changed about how I proceeded today? — I would have kept my door closed, like usual, and saved myself unneccessary angst before my three-day weekend.
I hope you enjoy your FFAF more than I have mine, and in spite of Bob, I have enjoyed my FFAF immensely thus far.
