Music Education is Totally Cool

Hi everybody, this is Luka’s mom. Just wanted to chime in and say I think it’s great she’s blogging for Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation. Anything that increases the level of musical education in the world is a good thing! Music is the greatest- especially when people actually participate personally! Our family has a history of music. My maternal grandmother was an accomplished piano accompanist and could play practically anything. She worked at a music store and would play the sheet music for people so they could hear it before they bought it. My mother used to teach junior high and high school orchestra. She played the violin for many years, and the viola da gamba. At 85, she’s also still pretty darn good on the piano and the harpsichord. One of my sisters plays the violin, and the three of us have an early music group, Music for a Time. We meet every week at Mom’s to play with two other guys, a lute player and a recorder player. Another sister is a professional music teacher and cellist in France. Yet another played the bass guitar in local blues bands. In addition to this group, I’ve sung in many other, widely varying styles of groups.  It’s a lot of fun.  I hope you have many opportunities to make beautiful music!
